🧠 General Resource Therapy questions answered FAQs

What is Resource Therapy?
Resource Therapy is a trauma-informed, brief psychodynamic parts therapy developed by Professor Gordon Emmerson, PhD. He created it as an advanced therapy model. He built on his work with John and Helen Watkins, who were Ego State therapy pioneers. It focuses on accessing, healing, and empowering parts of the personality, known as Resource States, our personality parts. Parts work offers powerful healing opportunities for many client issues

Is Resource Therapy different from IFS or Ego State Therapy?
Yes. RT uses direct part access, a clear diagnostic system, and 15 structured treatment actions. It builds on ego state theory but is a full model in its own right.

Is Resource Therapy effective for trauma and dissociation?
Absolutely. RT works beautifully with complex trauma, dissociation, and parts in emotional pain. Therapists can work safely with internal states without re-traumatising.

Can I do RT training online?
Yes – we offer a full Clinical Certification (Foundation program) live via Zoom, with optional in-person intensives in Bali.

Do I need to be a psychologist to train in RT?
No. RT is open to counsellors, doctors, mental health professionals, social workers, trauma therapists, and coaches with appropriate clinical experience.

What results can I expect with clients?
Many therapists report breakthroughs in 1–3 sessions with stuck or traumatised clients. RT provides a structured pathway to resolution, not just insight. Clients anecdotally report increased self-compassion, awareness and deep pattern changes.

Where should I start if I’m ready to enroll?
If you want to dive into Resource Therapy, begin with our 10-day Clinical Training Qualification Program. It provides a full clinical certification and eligibility to use the title Clinical Resource Therapist.

πŸŽ“ Training & Certification FAQs

What’s the difference between the Resource Therapy Foundation Certificate and Clinical training?
The Foundation Certificate Program (Days 1–2) offers a deep introduction to RT theory and skills. The Clinical Certification (Days 1–10) includes diagnosis, 15 Actions, and certification as a Clinical Resource Therapist. This qualification is necessary to be able to list on the Resource Therapy International Directory.

Can I start with Foundation and upgrade to Clinical?
Yes. Most therapists start with the Foundation, then continue to the Clinical Program. Your hours count toward full certification.

Is the training accredited or recognised?
Yes. Training is endorsed by Resource Therapy International. Philipa is President of Resource Therapy International, and Chris is Treasurer of RTI and on the RTI Executive Committee. Evidence that they are among the most senior and experienced trainers worldwide. Upon completion, you receive an official certificate and title usage.

Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. Foundation and Clinical Programs both offer certificates of attendance/completion for your CPD records.

🏝 Bali Hybrid Program FAQs

What is the Bali Hybrid training?
Our Bali Hybrid Program offers therapists the opportunity to complete Days 5–10 of the Clinical Certification in person. This is done after they finish Days 1–4 online. It’s a powerful way to blend online learning with deep, experiential practice in a luxurious and supportive retreat environment.

Who is the Bali program suitable for?
It is perfect for therapists who prefer a mix of online and in-person learning. These therapists want time for integration between sessions. They also value the opportunity to connect face-to-face with the international RT community.

Where is the Bali training held?
At a dedicated retreat venue in Ubud, Bali. It is led by Philipa Thornton and Chris Paulin, with guest appearances by Professor Gordon Emmerson (when available).

Do I need to complete the online Foundation or Clinical first?
You can start with the online Foundation or Clinical (Days 1–4). Then join us for the in-person Days 5–10 in Bali. Many participants also choose to repeat Days 1–2 for review.

Can I combine the Advanced program?
Yes – we often offer Advanced Clinical/Trainer modules either directly before or after Bali Clinical weeks. You can attend both to finish your full RT pathway in one inspiring location or online.
