As we know experienced therapists rarely need more theory.
Like all clinicians they need a reliable way to recognise what is happening in the therapy room and decide what may be most helpful next.
And I am excited to share that combination of compassion and clinical structure is what drew trauma therapist Claudia Wolf to Resource Therapy.
In this episode of The Resourceful Therapist, psychologist and Senior Resource Therapy Trainer Philipa Thornton speaks with Claudia about integrating Resource Therapy with EMDR, trauma-informed practice, therapy intensives and neurodiversity-affirming care.
Claudia also shares what it takes to move from practising Resource Therapy to teaching it.I loved hearing Claudia’s journey and depth of care.
What Is Resource Therapy?
Resource Therapy is a structured parts therapy model founded by Professor Gordon Emmerson PhD.
The model understands personality as comprising different parts, known as Resource States. Each Resource State has its own emotions, beliefs, memories, abilities and ways of responding. Together, they are our inner crew.
Imagine your personality as a ship. Different crew members come to the top deck and take the helm as life requires. We have a captain of the moment.
A confident Resource State may lead at work. A playful State may appear with friends. A caring State may take the helm when someone needs support.
Most of the time, our inner crew works together effectively.
Difficulties arise when a Resource State carrying unresolved trauma, fear, rejection, confusion or disappointment comes to the top deck. That part may respond to a present situation as though a painful experience from the past is happening again.
At other times, two otherwise healthy Resource States may pull the ship in different directions, creating inner conflict, indecision or procrastination.
Resource Therapy helps the therapist identify which crew member is at the helm and which Resource State actually needs therapeutic help.
The therapist then works directly with that usingpart a clear clinical framework and the most appropriate of the 15 Resource Therapy treatment Actions.
Resource Therapy therefore offers therapistsmore than a way to understand personality parts.
It provides a practical clinical map for recognising what is happening aboard the ship, identifying the Resource State that needs help and deciding what to do next.
The aim is to help the relevant Resource State receive the therapeutic intervention it needs so the inner crew can respond to present life with greater flexibility, confidence and choice in line with a persons values.
This clarity can be especially valuable when working with trauma, complex presentations and clients whose needs may change from one moment to the next.
Resource Therapy With EMDR
Resource Therapy and EMDR offer different but potentially complementary ways of working with traumatic experiences.
In this conversation, Claudia discusses how Resource Therapy informs her trauma work and how she brings it together with EMDR.
Rather than applying one method to every client, her approach remains responsive to the individual, their personality parts and their capacity for therapeutic work.
The result is not simply the addition of another technique.
It is a more considered way of deciding what the client needs, when they need it and which therapeutic pathway may be most useful.
Therapy Intensives for Trauma Work
Claudia works online and from Wolf Therapeutic Community, her Geelong-based practice in Victoria.
She offers three-day and six-day therapy intensives that incorporate Resource Therapy and EMDR.
Her clients include therapists, mothers, neurodivergent people, women navigating significant life changes and people living with PTSD or complex trauma.
Therapy intensives allow more time for focused therapeutic work than a standard weekly session. In the episode, Claudia reflects on the possibilities of this format and the importance of careful clinical preparation, pacing and responsiveness.
From Resource Therapy Practitioner to Trainer
Claudia qualified as a Resource Therapy Trainer in April 2025.
And boy has she dived in. By delivering five Resource Therapy Foundation trainings and is preparing to lead her first Clinical Resource Therapy training. Go Claudia!
This progression required more than knowledge of the model. It involved developing the confidence to demonstrate clinical work, guide experiential learning and respond to questions from experienced therapists and allied health professionals.
Claudia speaks candidly about stepping into the trainer role and the value of creating a learning environment where participants can ask questions, practise new skills and experience Resource Therapy for themselves. As trainers we value an interactive and engaging adult learning envrionment.
Her journey is an encouraging reminder that professional growth does not end when we become experienced clinicians.
Curiosity still matters.
Practice still matters.
Being willing to keep learning matters.
