Trauma-Informed Couples Therapy: Essential Skills for Therapists

3 needs every relationship therapist needs for trauma informed training workshop in Sydney with international presenter rare appearance

Concrete tools and community for the moments when dialogue is not enough

The couple sits across from you. Her eyes fall to the floor, as do her tears. His arms fold tight across his chest, his face grim – frozen. The Imago dialogue tool you had planned now feels impossible.

This is the moment when trauma has entered the room.

Most relationship therapists know this dynamic well. You have the skills, the training, the frameworks. But sometimes the silence, the shutdown, or the sudden outburst is not about the argument at hand. They are trauma speaking.

What Therapists Really Want from Training

Relational therapists across modalities like Imago, EFT, PACT, Gottman Relationship therapy share a similar vision for trauma-informed training. Three needs appear again and again.

1. Confidence in the Therapy Room

Therapists want to know exactly what to do when trauma shows up between partners. They want more than theory. They want clear steps that integrate with their existing models.

At the workshop: You will explore what we call the 3 R’s of Trauma Informed Couples Work™ – Recognise trauma’s presence, support partners to Regulate, and Restore connection. These principles are woven through Maureen McEvoy’s integrative approach, and you will leave with practical scripts, somatic practices, and concrete interventions you can use immediately.

2. Connection with Peers

Couples’ work can feel lonely. Therapists long for a community that “gets it.” Shared wisdom. Validation that their struggles are not unique.

At the workshop, You will join colleagues from Imago, EFT, Gottman, PACT, creative arts and other modalities. It is more than a training. It is a gathering of therapists who share your vision. You will come as colleagues and leave as friends.

3. Skills that Align with Values

Therapists want approaches that honour their clients’ humanity. They want non-pathologising, strengths-based methods that are deeply respectful of client experience.

It is in the doing. You will experience these innovations by applying what you are learning as we go through the program. No long lectures, Maureen’s practical exercises will land as you embody them ready for your next couples session.

At the workshop: With more than 30 years of trauma and couples therapy experience, Maureen shows and teaches how to weave somatic, arts-based, and polyvagal methods into existing frameworks in ways that fit your values and deepen your practice.

Why this Matters Now

Trauma is not a side issue. It is often the reason couples disconnect. Dialogue tools alone are not enough. To stay at the forefront of the field, trauma-informed training is essential. Clients are already asking for it. Tomorrow’s therapists will be defined by it.

Resource Therapy Clinical Training & International Conference – A Huge Success

The Australia Resource Therapy Institute (ARTI) has just returned from a transformative month in Bali, Indonesia, where we hosted two landmark events:

  • Completion of the Hybrid Clinical Resource Therapy Training for mental health professionals
  • The first-ever Resource Therapy International World Conference

Held in the lush surrounds of Ubud, these events brought together a passionate community of clinicians and educators from across the globe to deepen skills, share research, and celebrate the evolution of parts-based healing. We met Ernst from Zurich, great to see you, Richard from Hong Kong, our new Indonesian friends William, Robin, Flora and crew. Old Aussie friends and finally meeting Alkha, our RTI Executive delegate.

Why Resource Therapy Is Gaining Global Momentum

In a world increasingly turning to parts-based therapy for lasting trauma recovery, Resource Therapy is standing out as a leading modality that is both powerful and practical.

Developed by Professor Gordon Emmerson, PhD, Resource Therapy:

  • Accesses parts directly, not symbolically or imaginatively
  • Offers 15 targeted clinical actions for real behavioural and emotional change
  • It is brief, strengths-based, trauma-informed, and DSM-5 aligned
  • Supports work with dissociation, betrayal trauma, grief, anxiety, neurodiversity, chronic pain, and more
  • Can be integrated with EMDR, CBT, somatic therapies, and clinical supervision models

Whether you are a psychologist, trauma therapist, counsellor, hypnotherapist, EMDR practitioner, or coach, Resource Therapy gives you clear tools to work at the root cause.

Highlights From Bali 2025

Our time in Bali was rich in learning, connection, and clinical depth. Highlights included:

  • 🔄 Live demonstrations of RT Actions with complex trauma/ DID clients
  • 🧠 Insightful presentations on dissociation, betrayal, couples work, chronic pain, cultural diversity, ADHD, OPIs, Depression, Memory Reconsolidation, and RT for business coaching

Why the World Is Turning to Parts Work & Why Resource Therapy Is Leading the Way

Healing the inner child

The future of trauma therapy is parts-based. This week in Bali, the 2025 Resource Therapy International World Conference shows us exactly why.

As President of Resource Therapy International and co-organiser of this landmark global event, I am thrilled to be immersed in four days of clinical excellence, experiential learning and professional connection with fellow psychologists, psychotherapists, doctors, counsellors, trauma therapists, EMDR practitioners, neurodiversity specialists and coaches.

From Australia to Indonesia, Europe to North America, this conference is a living celebration of how Resource Therapy is reshaping the way we support healing at the root. It is therapy that works with the parts of the personality that carry emotional pain, defence strategies and inner strengths.

Why Parts Work Matters Now More Than Ever

Modern clinicians are waking up to a simple truth. You cannot talk a traumatised part into feeling safe.

Clients with complex trauma, betrayal wounds, identity fragmentation or chronic anxiety often hold wounded or stuck Resource States beneath conscious awareness. These parts need more than insight. They need to be heard, seen and healed.

That is the power of Resource Therapy.

It is a dynamic, strengths-based and neuropsychologically grounded model that helps therapists:

  • Map the exact Resource State in need of attention
  • Work directly with parts holding fear, shame, rejection, confusion or guilt
  • Use 15 targeted therapy Actions to resolve the emotional roots of distress
  • Support integration, even in complex cases, including Dissociative Identity Disorder
  • Build clinical confidence with a clear yet flexible framework

Whether you are a trauma specialist, couples therapist, coach, or just beginning your parts work journey – Resource Therapy gives you practical, respectful and transformational tools.

Inside the 2025 World Conference in Bali

This week, therapists from around the world are diving into cutting-edge parts work applications including:

  • Case presentations with DID clients using the RT diagnostic map
  • Affair recovery through parts-based couples work
  • Coaching and behavioural change with Resource States
  • Working with neurodivergent clients using strengths-focused parts interventions
  • Attachment repair and memory reconsolidation using RT
  • Live demos and experiential workshops of the 15 RT Actions

And we are learning directly from Professor Gordon Emmerson, the founder of Resource Therapy, whose clarity and compassion continue to light the way for our global community.

What Makes Resource Therapy Different?

Unlike many other parts-based models, Resource Therapy:

  • It is brief and targeted, often reducing treatment time
  • Uses precise language (no talk of exiles or managers – just Resource States)
  • Offers 15 specific therapeutic Actions for real change
  • Works in individual, couple, family and group formats
  • Integrates seamlessly with EMDR, somatic work and attachment therapy

It is ideal for trauma recovery, self-esteem building, resolving inner conflict, improving relationships, and performance coaching.
